Mirage IIIc, Academy 1/48

Test fitting and checking for nose weight

This was the second model I started working on after coming back to the hobby in fall 2021.  It’s a fairly basic kit, and I quickly learned why at that scale this and its sister, a IIIr, were only $14 CAD each.

The instructions are meh, the detail seems pretty good, but where there ARE fit issues, they are bad- at least to my preferences.

This poor pilot needs a sandwich!  And a file…
It was hard to tell if the head was deliberately flat on the back or it was a molding failure, but he only had half a head.
Unless I am mistaken, that is terrible fit.

The landing gear bays are blank, with some ugly engineering to glue them in place, and the instructions do remind you to add weight to the nose, but not how much…

As I’m new to using Tamiya White putty, but have drywall experience, I’m learning about sanding tiny things again…
It still isn’t perfect, but it’s about as far as I am willing to go for THIS kit- the fit of those intakes is so bad, I’m not sure that I want to do the R version.
As you can see, bare or open landing gear bays.  I think if/when I do the R version, it’s gonna be gear up…
In its current state.  Canopy has been masked, now to mask the black and get ready for the OOB paint scheme of bare aluminum.

Stay tuned!
